Reviving water tanks and ponds

As a part of our initiatives for the environment, IndiGoReach and its partner organisation- PRADAN, has undertaken the rehabilitation of water tanks and ponds in Madurai, Virudhunagar and Ramanathapuram/ Sivaganga in Tamil Nadu, where the scarcity of water is continual.

The broad objectives of this project:

  • Revive 8 water tanks and 10 village ponds
  • Create water channels to enhance the natural flow of water
  • Initiate tree plantations near the tanks and ponds
  • Support the community to manage water and agricultural resources
  • Creation of tank associations comprising community members
  • Train small/medium farmers and landless labourers in agricultural activities
  • Introduce fishery in the tank and ponds

This project which is being implemented in collaboration with farmers’ associations, elected Panchayats and district administration, is expected to have the following impacts in the long run.

  • Increased water availability
  • Improved crop production
  • Increased fisheries in the area

IndiGoReach has initiated this activity as environment is one of our key pillars of CSR intervention. Our project in Tamil Nadu will help us make a lasting impact and draw valuable lessons to expand this contextualised program in other parts of the country whenever the opportunity arises.
